5 Real-Life Examples of How Machine Learning and AI are Elevating Your Everyday

By Doug Mairet, VP of Data Solutions

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are buzzwords that have been making headlines for years.  Many people are intimidated by these terms, assuming that they are only relevant to the tech industry or require advanced technical knowledge to be understood.  However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

In fact, both Machine Learning and AI have practical uses in our everyday lives and do not need to be overwhelming or require fancy terminology to understand. You may even be surprised by how much you’re already benefiting from them both today.

First, let’s define what the terms “Machine Learning” and “AI” actually mean.  Machine Learning is a subset of AI that involves training algorithms to make predictions or decisions based on data, which improves an experience. AI, on the other hand, is a broader term that encompasses any system that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence.

To break it down even further, Machine Learning is a way of teaching computers to learn from data, and AI refers to using machines to mimic human intelligence and comprehension.

Let’s take a look at some familiar and practical uses for Machine Learning and AI in everyday life:

1. Personalized Recommendations

Have you ever noticed when you browse Netflix or Amazon, you’re given a list of movies or shows that you might like? That’s Machine Learning at work. In this case, the Netflix or Amazon algorithm analyzes your viewing history and preferences to recommend content it thinks you’ll enjoy based on the data collected.

2. Fraud Detection

Banks and credit card companies use Machine Learning algorithms to detect fraudulent transactions. These algorithms can quickly analyze vast amounts of data to identify unusual behavior, that may indicate fraud, and flag it for review.

3.Virtual Voice Assistants

Siri and Alexa are examples of AI-powered assistants. They use AI to understand natural human language and answer questions. They can also perform human tasks like setting reminders, making phone calls, and even controlling your home appliances.

4. Image Recognition

Another example of AI in action is Google Photos and how it simulates human intelligence to identify and categorize your photos based on who is in the photo, including family pets!

5. Medical Diagnosis

Machine Learning algorithms can analyze medical data, such as blood scans or blood tests, to help doctors make diagnoses. This technology can save lives by catching diseases early and helping doctors provide more personalized care.

These are just a few examples of how Machine Learning and AI are being used in our everyday lives. As you can see, these technologies are not as intimidating as they may sound.  They are simply tools that can help us perform tasks more efficiently and accurately.  As technology continues to improve we will see even more practical uses. It’s also important to note that you don’t need to be a tech expert to understand or utilize these technologies.  Many apps and devices that use Machine Learning and AI are user-friendly and require no technical knowledge to operate.

Machine Learning and AI are not fancy terms that should be feared or seen as intimidating.  They are practical, accessible, and becoming more prevalent in our everyday lives. By understanding their potential and limitations, we can embrace these technologies and use them to create new solutions and opportunities.
