HR’s New Role in AI Governance

Leading the human side of transformation.

Twenty years ago, when I joined eimagine, I never imagined remote-enabled workforces in the technology consulting space would be widely practiced, or that I’d be writing about Artificial Intelligence. Yet here we are.

Twenty Years of Transformation and One Constant

This week, as I celebrate my twentieth anniversary with eimagine, I’ve found myself reflecting on just how much our industry has evolved. Over the past two decades, I’ve had the privilege of watching our company, and our clients, navigate wave after wave of transformation. New technologies emerged. Client expectations evolved. Delivery models changed. Every advancement promised to redefine the way we work.

If someone had told me twenty years ago that I’d one day be partnering with AI to write a blog about the future of leadership, I probably would have laughed. Today though, I see AI much differently, not as something that replaces people, but as a tool that challenges our thinking, expands what’s possible, and creates new opportunities for people to learn, adapt, and solve more meaningful problems together.

Technology Creates Potential. People Create Value.

Looking back, one lesson has remained remarkably consistent: successful transformation has never depended solely on technology. It has always depended on the people who embrace it, lead it, and bring it to life. AI simply brings that truth into even sharper focus.

Technology creates incredible potential, but people ultimately create value.

I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some of the brightest technology professionals in our industry, and they’ve continually reinforced something I’ve long believed: technology creates incredible potential, but people ultimately create value. Technology may enable transformation, but it’s people who unlock its impact through curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to keep learning.

Today, Artificial Intelligence represents the next great opportunity to do exactly that.

AI Is Changing the Questions Leaders Ask

For the past several years, much of the conversation surrounding AI has understandably focused on the technology itself. Which tools should we adopt? How quickly can we implement them? What capabilities do they provide?

Those questions matter. Increasingly though, I’m hearing business leaders ask questions that didn’t exist just a few years ago.

They’re not asking whether AI can improve productivity; they’re asking how roles should evolve, how to prepare leaders for a different future, and how to ensure technology strengthens company culture rather than unintentionally eroding it.

Those conversations don’t have purely technical answers. They require leaders from across the organization, and HR has a unique opportunity to help shape them alongside business and technology leaders.

AI Governance Is About More Than Technology

When many people hear the phrase AI governance, they naturally think about IT, cybersecurity, legal, or compliance, and those functions play essential roles. But governance extends beyond technology. Every AI decision influences people, leadership, skills, trust, culture, the way organizations work together, and ultimately the experience they create for both employees and customers.

HR’s Role Is Shifting From Supporting Change to Shaping It

As AI becomes more embedded in organizations, I believe HR’s role is evolving from supporting change to helping shape it. Our responsibility isn’t selecting AI platforms or determining technical architecture. Our opportunity is helping organizations build the confidence, capabilities, and culture that allow those technology investments to succeed. Ultimately, AI succeeds not simply because organizations adopt a new technology, but because they enable their people to deliver greater value: for customers, for one another, and for the business.

Redesigning Work Around Human and AI Strengths

We’re helping leaders answer questions technology alone cannot. Our role isn’t just preparing people for change. It’s partnering with business leaders to thoughtfully redesign work in ways that allow both people and AI to contribute their greatest strengths.

The Questions We’re Helping Leaders Answer

How should work evolve as AI changes what’s possible, not simply by making today’s work faster, but by enabling entirely new ways of working?

Which uniquely human capabilities become even more valuable?

How do we prepare our People Leaders for new ways of leading?

How do we foster a culture where curiosity and continuous learning become competitive advantages?

The Most Important AI Questions Are Business Questions

Those aren’t simply HR questions. They’re business questions. And they’re becoming some of the most important conversations organizations will have over the next decade.

The Organizations That Learn Fastest Will Lead

At eimagine, one of the principles we continue to embrace is that technology creates value only when it helps solve meaningful business challenges. AI is no different.

The organizations that gain the greatest advantage from AI won’t necessarily be the ones with the most advanced technology. They’ll be the ones whose people learn the fastest, collaborate most effectively, and remain deeply connected as one team while solving meaningful business challenges.

BETTER SOLUTIONS. PROVEN RESULTS.
